Why the cookie banner asks visitors again
Omea Consent asks again when a choice expires (180 days by default) or when the banner texts change. Here's what counts as a change and how to control it.
On this page
A visitor’s choice doesn’t last forever. Omea Consent asks again in a few deliberate situations – and a couple of accidental ones are worth knowing about too.
The choice has expired
Under Omea Consent › Settings › Policies, Remember a choice for [N] days sets how long a choice stays valid – 180 days by default, up to 365. After that, the visitor sees the banner again. The consent cookie lives exactly as long.
You changed what the banner says
With Ask again when categories or banner texts change on (the default), editing any of these asks every visitor again:
- the banner message and its three buttons,
- the preferences window title and description,
- the four category labels and descriptions.
That’s intentional: consent covers what the visitor was shown. Changing the Save and close button text doesn’t count, and neither do translations – switching language never asks again.
If you’d rather not ask everyone again after every edit, switch Ask again when categories or banner texts change off. Visitors are then asked again only when their choice expires.
You turned subdomain sharing off
When you switch off One choice across subdomains (a Pro feature), Omea removes the shared domain-wide consent cookie so it can’t override the new one. Visitors who chose on another subdomain are asked once on this one.
The browser cleared it
The choice is kept in a first-party cookie and the browser’s local storage. Visitors who clear their cookies, use a private window, or browse in a browser that limits how long such storage is kept will see the banner again. Nothing on your site can prevent that.
It shows on every page
If the banner returns on every page view, something is stopping the choice from being saved:
- The browser blocks cookies or storage for your site. Check the browser’s site settings, or test in another browser.
- Two consent plugins. Another banner may be resetting storage. See Cookie banner not showing for how to find and deactivate it.
